Taboob

In this controversial photo project, Limburg-based photographer Noortje Palmers and conceptual creative Jasper Declercq focus on the limits of the Instagram algorithm. From when does Instagram censor a bare chest image? In fact: when will a breast no longer be a breast?

INSTAGRAMTRIAL & ERROR

Taboob is a noted art project in which the duo Palmers-Declercq try to fool the Instagram algorithm. Naked female breasts are after all relentlessly excluded from the social media platform, unless the bust looks somewhat different … But what criteria does Instagram use to banish one image and not the other? That is far from clear. Then it’s ‘trial & error’, thought Palmers and Declercq.

TABOOB PANDEMIA

The playing field became the instagram account @Taboob_official, on which they systematically launched new photos. After 24 hours the account already had 12,000 followers and from then on it went really fast. The social media and Taboob pandemic did not stand in the way of a decisive (er?) Occurrence of the algorithm and various images were promptly removed and that account with 38,000 followers was blocked. With @Taboobofficial they only launched a second account. Even more remarkable: the private accounts of Jasper Declercq and photographer Noortje Palmers were also affected and paralyzed at some point. The policy? Wet your chest to find out. Discover all facets of Taboob in all shapes, sizes and colors, banned or not, in the C-mine gallery. You can even pose between the Titalaya mountains to test – with the help of your own Taboob photo. #taboob #screenit

All Taboobs are for sale (50 euros) on taboobshop.be and the proceeds go to Think-Pink, the national breast cancer campaign. In the meantime, Taboob has already raised more than 4,500 euros.
